So I don't know how many of you are like me, but if you are you may have a slight problem tithing (not sure how that's spelled, but for the sake of argument we'll just go with it). Actually I don't have a slight problem I've got a big problem. Maybe you're like me and maybe put in 20 bucks every once in a while if you've got it in your wallet and are not planning on spending it for lunch. Sounds familiar to anyone? If so please take these words as encouragement and perhaps you too will feel convicted as I do and start tithing.
I was having a talk with a close friend of mine about tithing and he/she said that if we think about it, everything that we own is God's anyways. The only reason why we live here in Canada and why we always have way more food, clothes, and earthly possessions than we need, is because God has given them to us. They are gifs from God. So why is it a big deal to give a small portion back to Him? Tithe means ten. 10% of my paycheck should go to my church every month. No questions, no if's, and's, or but's. Its what the Bible tells me to do.
Leviticus 27:30, "A tithe (tenth) of everything from the land....belongs to the Lord; it is holy to the Lord." Numbers 18:26b, "...you must present a tenth of that tithe as the Lord's offering." Deuteronomy 14:22, "Be sure to set aside a tenth of all that your fields produce each year,"
I was listening to Praise 106.5 today. Chuck Swindol (I think) was giving a message on tithing (wow, God, how convenient ). He finds it interesting that when we go to a restaurant we leave a tip for the waitress. What is it? 10-15% of the bill? Very interesting indeed. We are willing to give more to a perfect stranger than we are to the One that we are to love more than anything else. Wow. That kinda hit home for me.
Guys I wish I could say that I don't want you to feel guilty or bad about not tithing, but I think we all should be convicted. And I don't really mean to guilt trip you because there are countless areas in my life that I struggle with. This is just a challenge that I'm throwing out there to ya. It shouldn't be a matter of choice, and it shouldn't even be a burden to us. Why can't we be as excited about tithing as we are about Shekinah or any other kind of worship. Tithing is worship.
I want you all to be accountable to me and make sure that I tithe regularly. Please take my challenge if you don't already give back to God. Please tell me if you'd like to start tithing regularly so that we can keep each other accountable.
Love you guys |
